DESCRIPTION:Cultural Competency: a Leadership Skill for Building the Chu
 rch Intercultural Competency is the ability to shift perspec
 tive and appropriately adapt behavior to the cultural contex
 tThis interactive workshop will include Biblical reflections
 , small group discussions, concepts to guide thinking and be
 havior, a theological framework, active exercises and analys
 es of real life church-based challenges.  Our intent is to p
 rovide resources and useful tools which are effective within
  a congregation as well as in relating to the neighborhood. 
  Participants will be offered the opportunity to learn more 
 about themselves through the Intercultural Effectiveness Sca
 le (IES) and the Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI). 
  These instruments provide concrete guidance to individuals 
 for planning their own continued development of intercultura
 l competency.  This day-long workshop will be facilitated by
  clergy members of i-Relate:  the Intercultural Leadership I
 nstitute.  All of the facilitators ground their leadership i
 n their own extensive cross-cultural experience.

DESCRIPTION:Since 2007, when land was purchased in the village of Kumi U
 ganda, Chinese Community UMC has been partnering with Youth 
 and Child Visionary Ministries to build a Christian Primary 
 School for Village children. This year marks the 4th Annual 
 Benefit Dinner which will raise funds towards the goal of op
 ening the school for instruction in January, 2014.  Guests w
 ill feast on a 9-course Chinese banquet at one of Oakland's 
 premier Chinese Restaurants, while the church's Missions Min
 istries Team leads them on a "journey" to Uganda via story, 
 song, music, and slideshow. Guests are also invited to bring
  gently-used children's books which will be sent to Kumi to
